My Boys

As I have said before I have 3 gorgeous boys.
Jack who is 6. He is very much a boys boy, Into anything boyish, fighting, football and wrestling. He loves playing with his Power Rangers and fighting with his little brother.
Ciaran is 3. He at the moment loves anything pink, power rangers, ribbons as long as it pink Ciaran will play with it. After Ciaran had his 2 operations at a young age I have wrapped him in cotton wool which I will have to stop doing as he is very fiesty and can give as good as he gets.
Aidan is 15 weeks and just a little gorgeous creature, he sleeps alot and when he isn't sleeping he just giggles and coos at people.

My hair

My hair has always been my pride and joy, when I told my friends and family I was shaving it all off they looked at me as though I was slightly mad. I am the person thats at the hairdresser every 8 weeks having my highlights fixed and my ends trimmed.

But when I thought about it, hair always grows back, well nearly always but some kids are just so poorly they cannot make it without help from the lovely doctors and nurses in Yorkhill, so if I can raise £1500 it will help pay for something in the hospital and all I have to do is shave all my hair off and have a cold head for a month or 2.

Hazel xx

Whats this all about

This blog is all about me shaving my hair off for charity, the what, the why and the are you completely mad.

On the 19th February 2004 my second son Ciaran was born, straight after birth the midwife thought there was something not quite right with him but the doctors said it was just because he was 4 weeks early and he was fine.

On the 20th February he was taken away for a new baby check and they discovered what they thought was a heart murmur but weren't to concerned as again early babies can sometimes have these and they clear up quite quickly.

On the 21st he was taken away again to check for the heart murmur and they detected something much worse. He was sent for an echo gram and it was discovered he had a pulmonary stenosis, this was explained to us and it wasn't the best news you can hear about your newborn but his wasn't "that" serious and he wasn't an emergency so we had to wait until the 23rd February for an appointment at Yorkhill hospital.

We took Ciaran up in the afternoon of the 23rd and our life's changed instantly, he was sent for another echo gram and the discovered his problem was a lot more severe than they thought at first. He had to have an operation the next day or he wouldn't make it to the end of the week.

On the 24th February we prepared Ciaran for surgery, its the worse feeling in the world sending your 5 day old son down for an operation. He was in theatre for 90 mins and when he was brought back out we were told it was great success.

On the 25th we took him home and expected to live life normally with him from then on. We took him back to Yorkhill for a checkup on the 5th March and during his echo gram they saw what they thought was blood coming from his heart, the doctor reassured me that it would heal its self and just to bring him back in a weeks time to double check.

Wednesday 10th March started off as a very normal day, hubby went to work and I stayed at home with our son's, I took them both to the Health visitor and they were both weighed and measured and given a clean bill of health.

I put Ciaran down for a sleep and set about making dinner. At about 5 Ciaran woke up and I asked my husband to feed him, as George was feeding him he made this horrible noise but I assumed he had guzzled his milk to quickly and just left George to it. about 30 seconds later George screamed at me to phone an ambulance as Ciaran wasn't breathing, George performed CPR on him as I phoned, they were telling us what to do but Ciaran was this horrible colour and gasping for air.

The ambulance arrived within minutes and they rushed Ciaran to Ayr Hospital, the paramedics just thought he had chocked as well and would be fine.

We were rushed straight into resuscitation and Ciaran had his clothes cut from him, at the time all I could think was those clothes were brand new and now they are wasted.

We were taken to the family room whilst they worked on Ciaran and about 2 hrs after we got there a doctor came through and told us that they didn't think Ciaran was going to survive as he had had a blood clot burst and his heart was filling with blood, we asked how long he had and they said at most an hour.

George and I broke down in tears and all i could think about was how I was going was I going to tell Jack his baby brother wasn't coming home. We phoned our parents with the news, and soon they were with us, waiting to say goodbye.

About 30 mins later another doctor came through and I thought she was coming to get us to say goodbye. But instead she was telling us that at the last minute she had tried a procedure that involves using a syringe to drain the blood from his heart. So instead of taking his last breath Ciaran had faint colour in his cheeks.

She had made him stable enough to consider open heart surgery so he was transferred to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow and they worked through the night to fix the damage that had been caused.

We were told to expect him to be in hospital for at least 4 weeks, 6 days after open heart surgery I took my tiny baby home finally and 3 1/2 years later he is fighting fit and a cheeky little man.

So that is why I'm shaving all my hair off, I want to give back a little for the excellent work they did in saving my son's life and its a lot more dramatic than a sponsored walk.
